Patient profile

This 43-year-old man complained of sharp, stabbing pain in his right shoulder for three years.  He had a complex history of multiple dislocations since the age of 16 from playing football and developed severe degenerative arthritis.

Pre-operative diagnosis:

Advanced osteoarthritis of the right shoulder, secondary to multiple dislocations

Surgical treatment:

Total shoulder replacement

Surgical Outcome:

One month postoperatively the patient had no complaints of the pre-operative pain. When seen three months after the procedure he had an excellent range-of-motion of his right shoulder and no complaints of any pain. He also had a fully intact rotator cuff musculature, which allowed him to return to competitive golfing activities for the past 15 years.
